Authors note on perseverance
My first memory of the word "Perseverance" was in the third grade, when I was awarded a certificate for "Most Persevering".
At the time, I had no idea what this big word meant. But as I look back on my experiences, perseverance has always had a presence in my life.
In the fifth grade, I successfully constructed my very own igloo by shoveling blocks of snow from the backyard of our home in Akron. It was cold, but how much satisfaction I had when it was completed!
I was a member of Hillsdale College's Cross country team. My time on the team further instilled these values, which have been a common thread throughout my life: practice, determination, and resilience.
Whether it be relocation to New Orleans and later to Houston, classroom teaching, or as a parent, and as an author…
Perseverance has been reflected in students, family and friends in my life.
My hope is to make this big word a little less intimidating to the next young generation.
